Set for sale/hire

The professionally-designed and built set specially created for our 2007 production is now available for sale or hire. Although designed for “The Gondoliers”, the set is eminently suitable for alternative operettas.

The basic set is static for both acts, but a marked change of scene in Act Two is achieved by introducing inset windows and throne canopy into the upstage arches which form the back wall of the set. Additionally, banners are hung above the archways, three of which form entrances, either side of the stage. These side walls are constructed with extreme perspective, giving the illusion of even more depth to the stage. Venice outline and rolling hill groundrows are also included to add further perspective upstage of the arches.

Set painting was undertaken by an experienced, professional scenic artist, who has enlivened the set with stunning grey and ochre Italianesque marbling – as can be seen in the photographs below. The light-coloured painting makes the set extremely sympathetic to lighting – the greys and ochres happily accepting both cool and warm tones.

The structure of the set is standard flattage construction, but with plywood facing rather than canvas, giving the whole set an extremely solid look and feel.

The set – for which a ground plan is available – is designed around a stage with proscenium width of 30ft and depth of 24ft (behind the proscenium), although the side walls are capable of being angled to accommodate a proscenium width of between 25 and 35ft, with the working depth also being variable by increasing or decreasing the entrance width between the side and back walls.
