Clare’s long walk

Clare White’s fund-raising evening on Saturday 24 May at the Torryburn Community Centre went well. 22 members/wives attended and a fine spread of food was enjoyed by all. There was a very successful raffle – sufficient prizes for one per person!  The G&S quiz raised a few laughs, with the eventual winner being our Chairman, Willie Campbell – appropriately celebrating his birthday that day. Willie provided piano accompaniment for some community singing plus a couple of duets from Dave and Brian.

The £200 raised will be split between the Society and Clare’s sponsorship for her trek to Machu Picchu, which is in aid of Bobath Scotland, a charity that helps children with cerebral palsy. If you didn’t come on the night, there is still time to make a donation via Clare’s JustGiving web page: Clare herself has now started her trek!.

Relay for Life

This 24-hour event on 23/24 August is in aid of Cancer Research UK and has been very successful in recent years, last year raising an amazing £31,700.

As a result of the offers received, and the show of hands at the 23 April rehearsal, the Society is now committed to fill a half-hour entertainment slot during the evening and to take part in the very moving “Candle of Hope” ceremony. Willie Campbell has agreed to organise and direct our part in this event. Further details to follow . . .

To give you an idea of the rest of the event (which is not all serious!), Geoff Strong has supplied some pictures of last year’s activities. You’ll recognise some shady characters in Pirates costumes . . .

Bert Lumsden, NODA Scottish Councillor, was on stage after the show on 20 February to give long-service awards to five members of the company. Congratulations to all!

Weekly money makers

To help keep the subs at a reasonable level, we have two activities that make a modest call on your pockets. The first is Bob’s bonus ball draw, which costs £1 per number per week. If your number is on the Saturday Lotto bonus ball, you get half the pool – £25, if all the balls are allocated. Bob will be running this draw once more when rehearsals for the main show commence in the Autumn.

In the interval of each chorus rehearsal we take it in turns to serve tea/coffee and biscuits, which are sold to make a profit . . . note that this season the price is now 50p. On the Rehearsals page there is a list of those responsible for organising the tea/coffee for each rehearsal. Please check to see when you are responsible, or you’ll never rest easy!

SUBSCRIPTIONS

Subs for 2008–09 will be £80 (students and unemployed £35), but the cost of membership is still a bargain at under £2.00 per week.
