Richard Simpson
Richard was ‘forced’ to join the Society in 2002 after a chance meeting with Geoff Strong at the annual Hobbies Exhibition in ‘The Glen’. This, and the persuasive skills of the current Mrs Simpson, found him on stage dressed as a peer for the 2003 production of Iolanthe. He thoroughly enjoyed his experiences and turned up again uninvited to join the chorus for The Mikado, Ruddigore and HMS Pinafore. 2009 sees him take on the minor principal role of Leonard Meryll, which he took on the proviso that he could still sing with the rest of the male chorus. Out of the Society, Richard has played an Apostle in Jesus Christ Superstar, Chino in West Side Story and Bob Cratchitt in Scrooge. This followed with a role of Barnaby Tucker in Hello Dolly with Kelty. He played Jesus in Theatre 18–30’s production of Godspell and Malcolm in The Full Monty – where he did have to take some clothes off! He spends the rest of his time keeping his wonderful supportive wife Heather happy with regular cups of tea. You may also see him running after a very active Rachel (4) and James (2) in the Kingsgate, usually about 3pm on a Saturday afternoon. His job involves websites, computers and BT customers: that is, confusion, mixed-up identities and a cast of strange characters. Good training for any G&S show!
