Martin Tarr

Martin was born in Cardiff, but moved to Bristol in early life. With over 40 years of living close to “God’s Wonderful Railway”, it is easy to see why he thinks of himself as a West Country man and saw last season’s role as Sergeant of Police as a home-coming!

Having discovered Gilbert and Sullivan whilst at school, Martin belonged to G&S societies in Bristol and Cambridge, but did not get his first taste of the stage until he joined Paignton Operatic and Dramatic Society . . . their Festival Theatre had 1,100 seats and no microphones, and Pooh-Bah’s sneer needed to be painted ¼-inch wide!

On moving to Berkshire in 1976, he joined East Berkshire Operatic Society, where he took several principal roles before matrimony and fatherhood intervened. Later, in Dunfermline, Martin “maintained a low profile”, until encouraged into the Society in 1998 by their “Pinafore in a Day”.

Martin has always belonged to choirs that tackle challenging repertoire, and has an affinity with unaccompanied music, and madrigals in particular – a former member of The Torbay Singers and the Torbay Cameo Singers, he met his wife, Myra, whilst singing with the Wokingham Madrigal Society (now the Cameo Singers). Since 1991, he has been a regular member of the Scottish Chamber Choir, as well as singing with local churches – in his spare time he is Financial Administrator for Viewfield Baptist Church.

Involved with electronics manufacture since University days, Martin came to Fife in 1988, since when he has been manager, consultant or trainer with a number of electronics companies and at the Scottish Advanced Manufacturing Centre, an off-shoot of Napier University. As his main work is now as a solo task, as developer of distance-learning material for students of Bolton University’s post-graduate programme, he really enjoys taking part in the “team effort” which is every Dunfermline G&S production.
