George Alexander
George’s first introduction to Gilbert and Sullivan was a rehearsal of the Edinburgh University Savoy Opera Group, at which he couldn’t seem to reach all the low notes that the other basses could. It turned out he was singing an octave too low! After that, and at the correct pitch, he joined Dunfermline G&S, and his first show was Iolanthe in 1975. That first show completed, he began to learn about Gilbert, Sullivan and their Operas, even attending a week-long G&S Summer School in 1976, and became involved in various concerts, both performing and constructing the programme. He continued in the chorus of Dunfermline G&S until the 1978 show, when he played the title part in the Mikado. Another significant fact about that year was that he met a girl in the chorus called Mary – and they were married in 1980. Having put together a small company called Opera Forth for the purpose, George wrote, organised, directed and sang in a musical play about the Operas called Bill & Arthur. This was performed as part of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 1978. He sang various parts until 1983, when, because of changing priorities and the arrival of the first of four children, he stopped performing altogether. There was a brief and rather different return to the Society during Die Fledermaus in 1994. George served that year as Business Manager, with a dinner jacket rather than a costume! Rejoining the Society for the 2006 show, along with Mary and two of the four children, Pirates of Penzance saw George on stage again for the first time in 23 years. It’s good when rehearsals can be a family outing! He found it good fun to be back, and the next year also sang with Kirkcaldy G&S for the first time, playing the role of the Mikado.
