Bill McCall
Bill McCall trained with vocal coaches Armando Tartaglia and Lydia Flett. He is a wand’ring minstrel as Chairman of energy-related companies around the globe, but spends his home time in Stirlingshire. After the settling of his adult voice his roles began at Lenzie Academy where he took the roles of Camille in Merry Widow, Fairfax in Yeomen and Prince Karl Franz in The Student Prince. In a wide and varied musical career, Bill has played almost all the G&S tenors (except Utopia, Iolanthe and Princess Ida), Frederic for the Glasgow University Cecilian Society and returned to take the character role of the Duke of Dunstable in Patience. He subsequently played the Defendant in Trial by Jury, Ralph in Pinafore, and Nanki-Poo in The Mikado. He played Marco as a guest with OLHSFPAOS in Gondoliers, reprising the role in 2009 for St David’s and in between times playing Luiz. In the dim and distant he had the pleasure of guesting as Frederic with East Kilbride G&S, and has also played the Pirate King in a Broadway version of Pirates. He returned to EKGS last spring to play Ralph Rackstraw in the society’s 40th anniversary production. Away from G&S he has sung operetta leads including Camille, Danilo, Alfred, and Eisenstein. In musical theatre, both Marius and Valjean in concert versions of Les Miserables, Freddy in My Fair Lady, Lieutenant Cable in The Sound of Music, Curly in Oklahoma and Bigelow in a concert of Carousel. He most recently played Captain von Trapp inThe Sound of Music with his ‘home’ society, St David’s Music Group in Kirkintilloch, for whom he has produced ten shows. Bill is a regular concert performer of Mozart, operatic and antiche arias and the Neopolitan repertoire, and has been a guest soloist with many choirs and music groups. He also sings a swing/big band set, and a personal highlight was performing with the Joe Loss Orchestra. He is delighted to be back with DGASS for his second year with the Society after playing Nanki-Poo in the 40th anniversary Mikado last year. He returns as the Lordly fopp, Tolloller in Iolanthe.
